Danielle’s top arty events of 2018

By HGB , Apr 22 2018
When it comes to arts events, we’re spoilt for choice in New Zealand. HGB designer Danielle Carden shares the arts events she’s most excited to check out this year.

2018 is going to be a big year for music, fashion and arts in New Zealand. Personally, I can’t wait. For a small country, we have an amazing selection of events on offer, and I love to check out as many as possible.

Here are three events on my calendar I’m most excited about.

1. New Zealand Fashion Week (NZFW)

From a young age I’ve always wanted to be a high-end fashion designer. So when I entered the arts industry, I decided to not box myself into one discipline. I let my love for fashion shine every day on my own ‘catwalk.’

Having sat in the front rows of local and international fashion weeks, I always get excited when I know NZFW is coming up. NZFW brings glamour, excitement and an undeniable buzz – and the best goodie bags.

Here is a snippet from one of my favourite designers, Stolen Girlfriends Club, during the 2017 NZFW show.

NZFW is one of the key arts events for New Zealand’s fashion Industry. It’s an important platform for local and international designers to showcase their collections and brands.

NZFW is held at the ANZ Viaduct Events Centre from 27 August – 2 September 2018, with a range of other events and offsite shows around the city before and during this time. Visit the NZFW website.

2. World of Wearable Arts (WOW) 2018 – 30th Anniversary Show!

“There are places only the imagination can reach.”

Whether you are a designer or just love the atmosphere of watching spectacular garments on stage, get ready for this very special anniversary event – I have a feeling this year is going to be the year you won’t forget!

For 30 years, WOW has invited people from across the globe to leave the world they know behind and join them to witness an extraordinary spectacle.

WOW’s annual event is held in Wellington from 27 Sep – 14 Oct 2018. This is very near the top of New Zealand’s best arts events. Get the creative juices flowing by reading all about 2018’s special event.

3. Ed Sheeran ÷ World Tour, March 2018

You may be questioning my choice of Ed Sheeran’s concert as a ‘top arty event’ so sit back and relax while I explain why Ed has had a huge influence on me as a creative.

His natural talent. Ed is a one-man band. When he plays his guitar onstage, it sounds like he has a whole back-up band, but really it is just Ed, his voice and his guitar – oh and his loop pedal!

His reluctance to be ‘labelled’. Ed doesn’t try to fit any one category. He even made his acting debut in 2014, in a cameo role as himself on Shortland Street!

His genuine approach to life. Ed approaches life as a genuine person without the glitz and glamour. His attitude of ‘embrace your weirdness and embrace your quirks’ is something I personally admire because being weird is a wonderful thing. Life would be boring if we were all the same, right?

If I had to pick only one song (which is very difficult, because I love all his music) I would encourage you to listen to I see fire, which was an original picture soundtrack special written for the Hobbit, Desolation of Smaug.

So…If you want to watch an inspiring man create art with his voice and guitar then come along to his Auckland shows in March. I’m sure you already know, I will be there!

Ed’s Auckland shows will be held at Mt Smart Stadium on Saturday 24 – Monday 26 March.
